Oil Pulling

here always seems to be a new "health craze" it changes weekly, if not daily. One that seems to stick around is Oil Pulling. Have you heard about it before? Let me give a little history. Oil Pulling has been used for centuries for Oral Health. *Remember, there were no tooth brushes, flossing, toothpaste, mouthwash or dentist back then. There was a lack of education on the subject, if any at all. It was originally practiced with Sunflower &/or Sesame Oil. It has been used primarily in Ayurvedic Medicine. In Ayurveda, it is known as gandusha.

*Ayurvedic Medicine - one of the world's oldest holistic (whole body) healing systems. It was developed more than 3,000 years ago in India. The practice believes in a delicate balance between the mind, body, & spirit. The main goal is to promote health & wellness rather than fight disease. Though there are treatments specific to health ailments.

Well lets dive into the juicy deets.

How does it work? Oil Pulling detoxifies the oral cavity. It literally cleans/removes toxins out of your mouth, contributing to a clean, antiseptic oral environment.

Why would I bother? Is there truly benefits?

  • defeats bad breath

  • prevents receding gums

  • heals bleeding gums

  • whitens teeth

  • prevents cavities

  • strengthen gums

  • aids tooth decay

  • prevents heart disease

  • improve acne

  • & the list goes on

So why am I using Coconut Oil? Coconut Oil contains a chemical compound called Lauric Acid. Lauric Acid can kill harmful pathogens like bacteria, viruses & fungi. This compound is what really helps combat bad breath, gingivitis, & removing plaque. Of course, Coconut Oil has an abundant of other health benefits which makes it that much more of a power house to have in your go-to health products.

How To Oil Pull

  1. Upon rising, before eating or drinking - oil pull first thing.

  2. Gently swish 1-2 tbsp of Coconut Oil (or Sesame) for about 10-20mins.

  3. Spit out & Rinse. Do not swallow (there are toxins). Spit into the trash not sink.

  4. Then you can brush your teeth.

  5. You can repeat this daily or minimum 3 days per week.

As a rule I add 3 drops of essential oil for 1 tbsp of Coconut Oil. I use Peppermint Essential Oil for a minty, fresh breath. Other pleasant additions include Lemon or Orange Essential Oils. If there is an infection or sickness, yes even the common cold, I would suggest Clove Essential Oil, Cinnamon Essential Oil, or Tea Tree Oil.

My go-to Coconut Oil is Silkeny Organic Virgin Coconut Oil. It is a family owned company with ethical practices & donate 2% of profits to non-profit Goodwill organizations.

I absolutely love Young Living Essential Oils. They are incredibly clean, ethical and believe in a seed to bottle process.
